City of Wichita GIS position announcement.

Although it’s already been posted elsewhere, I think given the regional nature of this blog it bears re-mentioning that the City of Wichita GIS department is looking for a GIS Analyst to handle water utility & public works-type duties. Real geospatial technology professional positions that pay what you’re worth and have good benefits are few & far between in the Sunflower State. Here are the details, straight from the horse’s mouth –

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
A position vacancy exists for a GIS Systems Analyst II. This is a full-time permanent position. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
The GIS position must possess highly developed GIS skills and experience to apply GIS tools to solve advanced issues for the Wichita Water Utility and Public Works Department for better decision-making. They will also be required to:

  • Utilize an AM/FM-MMS to create and update complex maps and/or perform complex spatial analyses to provide decision support related to the Wichita Water Utility and Public Works.
  • Perform data modeling and develop database designs and their successive improvement phases.
  • Work closely with application developers.
  • Manage vendor relationships.
  • Deliver technical support to the GIS users within the Wichita Water Utility and Public Works.
  • Provide training to the GIS users within the Wichita Water Utility and Public Works.
  • Perform spatial map analysis, modeling and reports.
  • Responsible for development and enforcement of GIS database standards.
  • Investigate and recommend sources and approaches for automating GIS database elements.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum required experience and training are:

System Analyst II —

The Analyst position is responsible for maintenance of the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) which includes updating base map files, maintaining comprehensive GIS databases, and designing and programming GIS applications. A four-year degree in Geography, GIS, Information Systems, or related field, and at least two years of experience and training working with GIS are required. Experience with ArcGIS, geodatabases, and SQL Server are preferred. Water and Sewer utility and Public Works experience is desired. Specialized experience and/or training in GIS (ESRI software), database development, application development is preferred. Experience in programming and implementing organizational GIS applications is highly desirable. Any combination of education and experience will be considered. Duties of the analyst filling this position will include:

  • Providing technical support for implementation and operation of all GIS projects
  • Maintaining the GIS base map files
  • Working on the development of GIS Internet/Intranet applications
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and maintenance of GIS databases using SQL Server, SDE, and ArcInfo; ensuring that current and future standards are met
  • Design and implement user interfaces in ArcView, ArcGIS, and IMS using ArcXML, and other high level languages
  • Cartographic production
  • Preparing technical documentation
